You can get the best answer to this by contacting a solar thermal dealer. This will depend on how many people in your household, on how much hot water you use and how much sunlight you receive. However: a typical family of four might require four square meters, and we can roughly guess that a square meter per person is a fairly accurate estimate. But don't hold us to that!
What is stand alone and grid connect?
Stand alone is when your power system is not connected to the utilities wires/grid system example T&TEC and your home is independent of the power station. Therefore if there is a power outage your home still has power.
Gird connect is when you home is still connected to the utilities and will have no power when there is a power outage.

An average sized middle class home would require a 2000Watts – 3000Watts sized system which is about 10- 15 panels if the panels are 200Watts rated.
What components comprise a stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) system?
A system comprises of an inverter to converter the power from DC to AC, photovoltaic panels to collect the sunlight, battery bank to store the energy for the night time when there is no sunlight, battery charge controller to ensure batteries are not over charged, appropriate sized cabling to distribute the power from the PV collector to the distributional panel box.
What is net Metering?
Net metering is a term used in the renewable energy field to describe a way of measuring and billing an electricity consumer that also has capability of generating electricity from renewable energy source. This type of meter referred to as a smart meter can measure both the electricity consumed as well as the energy generated from a home that has for example solar panels installed. This energy is not collected and stored in a battery source like self reliant off grid systems but is directly measured and feed into the grid hence potentially allowing residential and commercial homes to not just be consumers but decentralized generators as well.
